99% A Separation

All Critics (124) | Top Critics (37) | Fresh (123) | Rotten (1) | DVD (2)

These people seem so real they might live next door. And they probably do.

Very few movies capture as convincingly as A Separation does the ways in which seemingly honorable decisions can lead to interpersonal conflict -- even disaster.

To say the piercing Iranian film A Separation is about divorce is a bit like saying The Wizard of Oz is about a pair of slippers.

"A Separation" moves beyond one couple's sundering marriage to reveal growing rifts between generations, ideologies, religious mind-sets, genders and classes in contemporary Iran.

"A Separation" is a great movie, a look inside a world so foreign that it might as well be another planet, yet so universal that its observations are painfully familiar to anyone, anywhere.

Asghar Farhadi's emotionally epic movie is not just a masterpiece dramatically, it is a movie dramatically of its moment.

A clarion cry that cuts through the xenophobic clutter and the dense fog of war to show that not everyone "over there" is a boogeyman waiting to jump out of the closet. If that sounds terribly simplistic, just consider where we live.

A Separation is more than a character study; it's a deftly plotted drama that unfolds layer after layer and will leave you asking all kinds of questions about your beliefs and moral judgments. Fascinating stuff.

The story has no winners, and the daringly ambiguous ending defies simple conclusions. Even the title can be taken multiple ways.

The movie opens the door on a foreign culture, yet the people do not seem that dissimilar. .... They deal with some of the same struggles ... -- generational and class conflicts, ideological differences, and connecting and communicating emotionally.

A devastating portrait of two families in crisis, with their class differences representing the title's true 'separation.'

"A Separation" deals with some very murky issues, but it does so with astonishing clarity.

The movie is a singular mix of the foreign and the familiar, but is it the best 2011 film in the whole wide world? A 99? I can't say that I concur with my colleagues on that score.

A Separation explores how presumed social norms are extremely tenuous and how threats to these almost illusory ideas can threaten our sense of personal security.

Farhadi does not talk down to his viewer, and he trusts his audience to make their own decisions.

The performances and direction match the sharply observed screenplay, which is layered and nuanced, never settling for the pat answer. Indeed, it avoids answers as much as it can, giving audiences a far more interactive experience than most films

Thought provoking and powerful drama. One action becomes the trigger for the unravelling that filmmaker Asghar Farhadi explores: secrets, lies and truths are exposed

a brilliant, mesmerizing drama, incredibly well-acted by its ensemble cast

One of A Separation's many virtues is the way it gradually reveals, Rashomon-like, the complicated facts, half-truths, and lies that each character tells for perfectly legitimate reasons.

Finely crafted drama teems with conflicts involving class, generations, mental health and good old fashioned lying.

?

An eye-opening experience, and a fascinating glimpse into a culture that's totally alien to my eyes.

What is a sin? What is right? When is it okay to lie? All these questions swirl in a movie that might possibly be the best foreign language film at this year's Academy Awards.

"A Separation" is a plaintive fable of the human condition that unites us.

One of the year's best reveals life in Iran

A tragically familiar family drama whose heartbreaking "for want of a nail" sequence of events spirals out of control at an intimate and individual level.

Ocean acidification worst in 300 million years, study finds (+video)

Researchers at Columbia University have found that carbon dioxide emissions have lowered the pH at a rate unparalleled in at least the last 300 million years of our planet's history.

The oceans are becoming more acidic faster than they have in the past 300 million years, a period that includes four mass extinctions, researchers have found.

Scientists are studying organisms in Antarctic waters to discover the repercussions of acidification caused by dissolved carbon dioxide.

Then, as is happening now, increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere warmed the planet and made the oceans more acidic. These changes are associated with major shifts in climate and mass extinctions.

But while past increases in the atmosphere's carbon dioxide levels resulted from volcanoes and other natural causes, today that spike is due to human activities, the scientists note.

"What we're doing today really stands out," lead researcher B?rbel H?nisch, a paleoceanographer at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, said in a news release. "We know that life during past ocean acidification events was not wiped out ? new species evolved to replace those that died off. But if industrial carbon emissions continue at the current pace, we may lose organisms we care about ? coral reefs, oysters, salmon." [Humans Causing 6th Mass Extinction]

As the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases, oceans absorb that carbon dioxide, which turns into a carbon acid. As a result the pH ? a measure of acidity ? drops, meaning the water has become more acidic. This dissolves the carbonates?needed by some organisms, like corals, oysters or the tiny snails salmon eat.

In their review, published Thursday (March 1) in the journal Science, H?nisch and colleagues found the closest modern parallel about 56 millions ago in what is called the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum, when atmospheric carbon concentrations doubled, pushing up global temperatures. Extinctions in the deep sea accompanied this shift. (The PETM occurred about 9 million years after the dinosaurs went extinct.)

But, now, the ocean is acidifying at least 10 times faster than it did 56 million years ago, according to H?nisch.

Ocean acidification may also have occurred when volcanoes pumped massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the air 252 million years ago, at the end of the Permian period, and 201 million years ago, at the end of the Triassic period, they found. Both are associated with mass extinctions.

"The current rate of (mainly fossil fuel)?carbon dioxide release?stands out as capable of driving a combination and magnitude of ocean geochemical changes potentially unparalleled in at least the last 300 million years of Earth history, raising the possibility that we are entering an unknown territory of marine ecosystem change," the researchers conclude in their paper.

Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens : Orlando Family Magazine

Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens

Bringing wildlife and educational fun to Central Florida families since 1923

The Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens opened its doors to the public in 1923 with a collection of donated animals from the Sanford Fire Department. Over the years, the Zoo relocated to several locations throughout Sanford, until it finally set down roots at its current location on July 4, 1975.

Today, the Central Florida Zoo is home to over 400 animals, not including the enormous collection of bugs at the Massey Services Insect Zoo. The Zoo continues to serve the Central Florida community as the premier recreational and educational attraction for the entire family.

    Breaking News!

The newest animal addition to the Zoo is a pair of clouded leopard cubs. The adorable pair?s exhibit, a brand new clouded leopard enclosure, was opened to the public on February 11, 2012.

The leopards came to the Zoo as the result of a partnership with the Clouded Leopard Consortium in Thailand. The male cub was born March 28, 2011 at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute ? National Zoological Park.? He was transferred to the Nashville Zoo at Grassmere in Nashville, Tennessee on September 9, 2011 and then transferred to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, WA on September 22 to be introduced to their young female cub.

The female was born at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium on June 14, 2011.?The female?s parents were born at the Khao Kheow Zoo in Thailand and are descendants of wild clouded leopards.

?We are pleased to be able to give these new cubs a home,? says Shonna Green, Central Florida Zoo?s? Director of Communications & Community Resources.??The majority of our guests have never had the opportunity to see a clouded leopard up-close or experience the thrill of seeing such an animal in the wild.?

What To Do at the Zoo

Are you an adventure fanatic? The Zoo will get your adrenaline pumping with its ZOOm Air Adventure Park, where you can fly through the sky and zip through the treetops on an aerial adventure course. If you?re a little shy of heights, schedule a fast-paced laser tag adventure with Battlefield Live Orlando, or take a guided Segway x2 On-Road or Off-Road Adventure Tour through the Zoo.

During those blistering hot days at the Zoo, bring your flip-flops and bathing suit to cool off in the Wharton-Smith Tropical Splash Ground! Parents will enjoy the shaded Adirondack chairs to relax in, as the kiddos splash and play in the refreshing water.

Have you ever wanted to feed a llama? At the Animal Adventure Children?s Zoo, you can spend time feeding and petting domestic animals, such as sheep, goats, turkeys, zebus, and llamas.

Also, don?t forget to stop by the Herpetarium, which is home to the largest collection of venomous and non-venomous reptiles in the Southeast and the favorite exhibit of the Hughes, a local family of five. The Hughes love visiting the zoo to see the animals and exhibits. ?We?ve been there a few times,? states Erica Hughes. ?I really like the reptile exhibit and everyone there is really friendly.? Erica adds that the facilities and exhibits are very clean and that she and her sister have always enjoyed their zoo experience and the memories they made.

Weekends at the zoo are always entertaining with special animal education programs, such as Keeper Chats, Reptile Demonstrations, Feline Feeding Programs, and Bird Shows. The zoo offers several educational animal awareness programs every month that give kids the opportunity to have nose to nose animal encounters. The ?Snake Awareness Presentation? teaches parents and kids the do?s and don?ts when encountering a reptile, as well as offering tips to keep snakes out of your yard. Also, ?Snooze at the Zoo? and ?Wild Night Camping Adventure? give kids the chance to stay overnight at the zoo and see the animals after dark.

Birthday parties, camps, and preschool programs are always exciting ways for children to get immersed in the tropical and exciting setting at the zoo. Not only are there great programs for children, but the zoo also offers teacher and adult workshops.

Brittany Friedrich, a Longwood preschool teacher, shares some insight regarding the benefits of the zoo. In her classroom, Brittany is teaching a unit on the Rainforest and plans to take her kids on a field trip to the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens this year. ?It?s an exciting opportunity for them to see the animals that we learned about in school and have heard?about in?the stories I have read to them,? says Brittany.

    Green Living & Recycling

The folks at the zoo recently received a grant from the PNC Foundation that allowed them to install eight cisterns capable of holding over 4,000 gallons of rainwater to recycle? and then use for irrigation around the zoo?s property. To support a greener environment, the zoo also provides an Electronic Waste Recycling Drive, where you can drop off your old e-waste items, such as computers, printers, cell phones, and DVD/VCR players at the zoo?s community recycling station.

Yorba Linda Retirement Planning - Create a Retirement Plan in ...

    Dependable Retirement Planning Advisors

Yorba Linda retirement planning is one of the most important processes that you can complete if you want to take control over when you will retire in California and how much money you will have during the retirement era. Most people don't begin to realize the importance of Yorba Linda retirement planning for the money they will have during the retirement years in California until they've reached the point where they will no longer have control over how many more years they will need to work. Rather than allowing your money in California to have control over you, the best option is to take control with your finances now by beginning the Yorba Linda retirement planning process sooner.

From meeting with a professional in Yorba Linda to learning as much as possible about the various types of retirement accounts that can be chosen, many details can be gathered when you are new to the Yorba Linda retirement planning process. The more you learn during this initial phase, the more successful you will likely be when it comes to planning how many years will remain until you retire and how large of an income you will have in CA at that time. As such, the following are examples of the decisions you can make in CA at this time to have a brighter future.

    Choosing an Account

The selection of a Yorba Linda retirement planning account is going to impact many future aspects of the saving process. This selection can impact everything from the manner in which you will pay taxes on the investments to the ability of the funds to grow rapidly with the assistance of compounding interest. As such, when it comes to the California retirement planning process, one of the most important things is to focus on the selection of a proper account with the assistance of a CA financial professional. From a Roth IRA to a traditional version of an IRA, this is the time when you will encounter a variety of options.

Again, a variety of details can be taken into consideration with the assistance of a Yorba Linda financial professional to determine which account you should be opening. You can also review the manner in which you will be required to pay taxes on the investment contributions and earnings to make the proper selection with regards to the situation that you are in. These initial decisions, if made in the proper manner, can then set you up for immense future success regarding achieving your goals of taking retirement in Yorba Linda at a particular time.

    Finding Money to Invest

If you are new to the working world and are still repaying debts such as student loans and other types of loans, you may not think that investing is very much of a priority. However, the time when you are still young and new to the working world is actually the best time to begin investing for the Yorba Linda retirement planning process, regardless of how little you may be able to invest. This is typically the best time to begin saving because time is the best asset available when it comes to making more from the power of compounding interest.

As such, although you may be focused on currently paying off debts, it can also be important to start establishing Yorba Linda retirement planning goals at this time. At least by learning how much earlier you could reach retirement by starting to invest now, you may become more inspired to take action rather than putting the planning process off until the future. Even if you can only afford to invest a very minimal amount, this will be much more effective for planning out the future rather than not taking any action at all. A Yorba Linda retirement planning expert can also provide assistance with those details that you do not fully understand.

    When to Retire

Making a decision regarding when to retire in Yorba Linda is an important detail. This is a very impactful planning detail in Yorba Linda since it will determine how much you need to begin investing now so that your goal of retiring at a certain age will be achievable. This can also provide the guidance that is needed for such important decisions as determining the risks to take with investments as well as which planning accounts should be opened.

If you take the proper action now, you will likely reach retirement in Yorba Linda at a younger age with more money. This will then offer immense freedoms to begin enjoying life more and to do everything you have always dreamed of doing. However, to reach that point, you will need to start making Yorba Linda retirement planning decisions now so that your future will be more properly planned.
