Alexander Von Humboldt, Polymath and Renaissance Man

According to Charles Darwin, the Prussian explorer, geographer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt was ?the greatest scientific traveler who ever lived.? In fact, it was during his famed voyages in Latin America that von Humboldt cultivated his modern scientific concepts and ideas, which garnered him prominence within the scientific community at that particular day and age. The central idea scientific thinking was that absolutely nothing on our planet could be fully comprehended in isolation. Every living thing had to be understood in relation to other fields of science such as astronomy or meteorology. As we will explain later, von Humboldt?s thesis is not at all surprising, for the main reason that his scientific thinking expanded well beyond his respected field; consequently, he is now known to us as a celebrated polymath and the last Renaissance man in history.

When he was just a child, Alexander von Humboldt was known to his family and friends as ?the little apothecary?, since he developed a penchant for collecting and labeling different types of insects, plants, and seashells. Already his all-around interests in various phenomena, which would widen continually during his early education, foreshadow his future polymath expertise. Von Humboldt studied finance for half a year in the University of Frankfurt; one year later, he enrolled in the University of Gottingen, where he was able to listen wholeheartedly to the lectures of the revered archaeologist C.G. Heyne and the naturalist J.F. Blumenbach.

It was shortly after he published his first scientific treatise that centered his passions on travel. Here, he befriended Georg Forster, now known today as the founding father of modern scientific travel literature. In order to prepare for his future travels, he then studied commerce and foreign languages in the University of Hamburg, geology at the University of Freiberg under the teaching of A.G. Werner, astronomy and scientific engineering under J.G. K?hler and F.X. von Zach, and anatomy at the University of Jena under the famed anatomist and surgeon J.C. Loder. The vast field of knowledge of this Renaissance man would widen even more when von Humboldt made the acquaintance of the botanist Aim? Bonpland, and together they set off for the uncharted territories of Latin America.

With his extensive knowledge on the physical sciences, von Humboldt, now in Latin America, was able to collect important data concerning more or less every field of natural science: archaeology, botany, geology, geography, oceanography and zoology. Because of his polymath manner of thinking, he was bright enough to harmonize all these different fields of sciences into a single, prescient thesis. This theory stated that everything in nature is interconnected. For instance, biology, geology, and meteorology (a science that von Humboldt founded), determined where specific flora and fauna grew; another example proposed that the continents bordering the Atlantic Ocean were joined long ago.

All these modern scientific views were to be published in a massive five-volume work called ?Cosmos?, but Alexander von Humboldt, the last Renaissance man, died before he could complete it. However, his mark on science remains indelible to this very day.

Designer Vivienne Westwood recycles ideas for latest collection

LONDON (Reuters) - British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood claims she hopes no one will buy her latest creations - for the sake of the planet.

"I'm a fashion designer, I have not given up my job or anything, so of course I try not to waste, and my way of not wasting is to try concentrate on quality not quantity. And you know my message, it is buy less, choose well, make it last," Westwood told Reuters.

"I wish they wouldn't buy this new collection," she added. "Don't buy any clothes for ages until you really have to."

Her latest offerings may however prove hard to resist for fashion lovers. She describes them as recyclings of really good ideas her brand has had in the past.

Held in the grand setting of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, her show featured a medley of beautifully tailored dresses, jackets and skirts with graphic floral prints, candy-cane striped shirts and cropped capri pants.

The result was a mixture of ladylike elegance with a quirky twist. Sleeveless silk dresses in mustard yellow, midnight blue and cherry red were paired with lace and broderie anglaise buckled boots.

"The Red Label collection has always been madam ... it's a bit I'm this woman kind of thing," Westwood told Reuters.

"I think it's influenced a bit by, well, I won't say, you'll have to decide for yourselves."

Models sported bold cartoonish make-up, painted over their red, green and yellow faces, and fifties-inspired hairstyles.

A hot pink one-shouldered floor-length gown drew sighs from the crowd, as did an off-the-shoulder ditsy printed piece.

Printed headscarves and embellished belts tightly cinching in models' waists also featured, along with wallpaper-inspired florals, glossy silk dresses with sequin detailing and ruching.

The designer herself wore a sequined hat, a white t-shirt emblazoned with her eco-slogan "Climate Revolution" and platform shoes. She painted a moustache and circle around her eye in black during the finale of the show, in which Westwood and two models held up a Climate Revolution banner.

Stress, depression may affect cancer survival

"A sad soul can kill you quicker, far quicker, than a germ," John Steinbeck once wrote. Now we are closer to understanding why.

A disease like cancer can be a mortal battle, often fraught with overwhelming stress. Given that stress management can be difficult even under ordinary circumstances, elevated feelings of anxiety and depression in cancer patients are certainly understandable.

Yet, several recent studies underscore how critically important it is for those fighting illness to learn how to combat stress.

A team of researchers led by Lorenzo Cohen, professor of general oncology and director of the Integrative Medicine Program at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, found that symptoms of depression among a group of patients with late-stage renal cell carcinoma were associated with an increased risk of death. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE in August.

The chief suspects in Cohen's study: cortisol -- also known as the "stress hormone" -- and inflammatory pathways.

"This study is the next step in the process of understanding that emotional factors have an impact on biology, which can, in turn, influence outcomes in cancer," says Cohen.

Cortisol is the hormone produced by the adrenal gland in response to stress. It helps regulate the inflammatory response in the body.

According to Cohen, under normal circumstances cortisol levels should be high in the morning and drop throughout the course of the day. But among patients experiencing chronic stress or depressive symptoms, cortisol levels can remain sustained throughout the day, with less of a decrease in the evening.

In the study, those patients with sustained cortisol levels throughout the day had an increased risk of mortality. Through gene profile analyses of patients, the researchers documented that the association between patient psychological condition and survival time may stem from a dysregulation in inflammatory biology.

Two other studies on how stress influences other illnesses shed further light on this process.

Three dead as protesters attack U.S. embassy in Tunisia

TUNIS (Reuters) - At least three people died and 28 others were wounded on Friday after police fought hundreds of protesters who ransacked the U.S. embassy in Tunisia in their fury over a film denigrating the Prophet Mohammad, state television said.

A Reuters reporter saw police open fire to try to quell the assault, in which protesters forced their way past riot police into the embassy.

The protesters smashed windows, hurled petrol bombs and stones at police from inside the embassy, or started fires in the embassy and the compound. A black plume of smoke rose from the facility.

One protester was seen throwing a computer out of a window, while others walked away with telephones and computers.

A Tunisian security officer near the compound said the embassy had not been staffed on Friday, and calls to the embassy went unanswered. A Reuters reporter saw two armed U.S. soldiers on the rooftop.

The protesters, many of whom were Islamic Salafists, also set fire to the nearby American School, which was closed at the time, and took away laptops and tablet computers.

The protests began after Friday prayers and followed a rallying call on Facebook by Islamist activists that was quickly endorsed by the local faction of the Islamic militant group Ansar al-Sharia.

Libyan officials suspect the Libyan branch of Ansar al-Sharia of being behind an attack in Benghazi in which four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador to Libya, were killed on Tuesday.

The moderate Islamist Ennahda movement, which heads the Tunis government, had advised Tunisians against participating in the protest against the crude, low-budget film, made in California and trailed online, which portrayed the Muslim prophet engaged in vulgar and offensive behavior.

"The (Tunisian) government does not accept these acts of aggression against foreign diplomatic missions," said a statement read on state television. It said Tunisian authorities were "committed to ensuring the safety of foreign diplomatic missions".

Hundreds of protesters wielding petrol bombs, stones and sticks had charged at the security forces protecting the embassy before jumping a wall to invade the compound.

"Obama, Obama, we are all Osamas," they chanted, in reference to the slain al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden.

The protesters pulled down the U.S. flag flying over the embassy, burned it, and replaced it with a black flag emblazoned with the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith.

Riot police finally drove the protesters from the embassy and the compound, and a Reuters reporter saw them arresting around 60.

The compound was cordoned off by police, soldiers and members of the elite presidential guard, but clashes continued in the el-Aouina district across a highway from the smart Auberge du Lac neighborhood where the embassy is located.

Oil above $99 after Fed vows action on economy

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices rose above $99 a barrel Friday in Asia after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced a plan to jolt the U.S. economy and unrest in the Middle East heightened concerns about supply.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was up $1.40 at $99.71 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract closed at $98.31, up $1.30, on Thursday.

Brent crude was up $1.61 cents at $117.49 a barrel on the ICE futures exchange in London.

The Fed said it will spend $40 billion a month to buy mortgaged-back securities for an indefinite period. The purchases are intended to lower long-term interest rates to spur borrowing and spending.

The Fed also extended a plan to keep short-term interest rates at record-low levels through to mid-2015, as it attempts to boost an economy it says is too weak to reduce high unemployment.

Expectations of action by the Fed, as well as the European Central Bank and China's government, have balanced gloomy economic news and kept oil in a narrow range the past few weeks.

Oil analyst Stephen Schork said in a commentary that the Fed decision, was tantamount to "flooding the market with dollars." Because oil is traded in dollars, holders of currencies stronger than the dollar would buy it, causing its value to go up.

Traders on Friday also kept a close eye on unfolding unrest in the oil-rich Middle East.

Protesters stormed the U.S. Embassy compound in Yemen's capital Thursday. Ongoing clashes have been taking place around the U.S. mission in Cairo, and the U.S. ambassador to Libya was killed Tuesday.

In other Nymex trading, gasoline was up 5.6 cents at $3.018 a gallon and heating oil added 4.1 cents to $3.252 a gallon. Natural gas fell 1.1 cents to $3.048 per 1,000 cubic feet.
