Sony's future gaming console will keep have an optical drive by VR ...

Cloud gaming services such as Valve?s Steam are stirring up the traditional brick and mortar gaming market, but according to WSJ.com, Sony will not abandon the optical disk in its next gaming console.? Hence, the days of people collecting physical copies of video games may not come to an end after all.

In 2013, Sony will release the PlayStation 3?s successor with improved hardware while maintaining most of the same business strategies.? Sony has reported profit from its PS3 platform the last two years, and Sony?s Chief Executive, Kazuo Hirai, hopes that the new console will continue to rake in the profits.

Many brick and mortar companies that associate themselves with Sony will be at risk of incurring huge losses in revenue if Sony did decide to go the downloadable content only route in the next Sony gaming console.? GameStop, a major outlet for many PS3 games, agrees that it will need to transition to a cloud system of distributing gaming titles to remain relevant in the gaming market.? However, as with any major industry transitions, it will take some time to adopt.

"If we all agree the technology is inevitable?which I think it is because it's like death and taxes?it's still going to take longer to happen than it did for music and movies," GameStop?s CEO, Paul Raines, commented about the gaming market?s transition to a cloud based platform.?

Perhaps Sony is trying to maintain a good relation between itself and its business partners by opting to keep the optical drive as the main mean of software decoding.? However, that does not mean that Sony is unaware of the inevitable market transition to the clouds.? Sony intend to integrate more downloadable contents into its future console, more than it currently has in its PS3 console.?

In addition to maintaining good relationships with its partners, Sony believes that worldwide internet connections are not stable enough for it to make a complete transition to downloadable only contents.? Sony wants its product to be in the hands of as many people as possible, and to make a product that requires a fast and stable internet connection only limits that objective.

Until Sony releases a cloud only console, those of us that have shelves of PlayStations CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays may continue tout our tangible collections for the world to envy.

Lenovo K800 Intel phone launches in China

Back at CES in January, we went hands on with the first consumer Android device powered by Intel. While it can no longer claim to be first -- the Lava Xolo beat it to market -- the Lenovo K800 has now finally made it on sale, albeit in China for now. 

Powered by a 1.6GHz Intel processor over a 4.5-inch IPS display with 1GB of RAM, the K800 should stack up quite nicely. It does launch running Gingerbread, but as Intel demonstrated themselves, this is a highly optimized version of Gingerbread. The K800 is available for RMB 3299 ($524) but as yet there is no word on availability elsewhere. 

There is still no sign of any Intel powered Android devices hitting North American shores, but the UK market is set to receive its first in the near future. Orange UK will be releasing their own brand device, codenamed Santa Clara, which on specs at least is a match for the K800. Orange will be pulling the wraps off the Santa Clara on May 31 in London, and of course Android Central will be there to go hands on.

Greek tragedy: Economic crisis sparks brain drain

"Things are getting worse and worse in Greece. There is no future for the next few years there," says Christos Christoglou, a Greek inspection engineer who moved to Germany to find work.

MAINZ, Germany ??Thousands of well-educated workers are fleeing Greece as the eurozone crisis batters their homeland.

Germany, Europe's economic powerhouse and?a country which has been criticized by many Greeks over its harsh demands for austerity cuts in return for bailout cash, has experienced an influx of young skilled immigrants.

Der Spiegel magazine noted that while Greek newspapers "printed cartoons depicting the Germans as Nazis, concentration camp guards and eurozone imperialists who allow their debtors to bleed to death," the Greeks have kept arriving ??bringing an "anything is better than Athens" attitude with them.

With more than 50 percent of young Greeks out of work, it's not surprising that official statistics show?the number of Greeks who moved to Germany increased 90 percent during 2011.?

Unemployment rates have consistently been shrinking in Germany in recent years and the economy is thriving despite Europe's ongoing financial crisis. Relaxed cross-border employment regulations for member states of the European Union also make Germany an attractive choice for job seekers.?And while Germany is in need of specialized workers, the Greek labor market has little to offer.

"It is virtually impossible to find a job in Greece at the moment,"?says Christos Christoglou, an inspection engineer who took a job at?German chemical and pharmaceutical giant Bayer?at the start of the financial crisis in June 2010. "It is not that there are only very few jobs for young graduates to seek, no, there are none, zero, there is nothing."

A year after moving to Germany, Christoglou's wife Mary and their 5-year old daughter Georgina joined him last summer. The family now lives in a four-bedroom apartment in Leverkusen. They are likely to stay for good.

"My wife, an English teacher, and our daughter, do not speak German yet. But my Mary will soon also try to find a job," Christoglou told NBC News.?"And while, yes, it is quite difficult to be without our close friends and family in Greece, I do not want to waste my six years of intensive studies to find myself without hope for the future."

Christoglou, 38,?says incentives are needed to prevent Greece's well-educated workforce from abandoning the country.

"I know many Greek academics, but also ordinary workers, who have moved to wealthier European countries, like France, the Netherlands or Sweden," he added.

Greek debt woes put Europe on financial knife edge

According to Germany's national statistics office, some 24,000 people left Greece last year to live and work in Germany, almost double the number who did so in 2010. However, Der Spiegel quoted?Hamburg-based immigration expert Vassilis Tsianos as pointing out that those figures did not include people who had not registered with German authorities. Tsianos told the magazine he estimates that 60,000 new Greek immigrants arrived in Germany in 2011.

There was also a significant spike in the number of immigrants relocating to Germany from other economically depressed southern European countries last year, with official statistics showing an increase of 52 percent from Spain, 28 percent from Portugal and 23 percent from Italy.

Until a few weeks ago very few people had heard of him, but Alexis Tsipras could soon be the next Prime Minister of Greece. His anti-austerity stance won his party second place in the recent election, and the forecasts for next month's run-off suggest they could do even better.

The recent arrivals include 27-year-old IT specialist Vasileia Paschali, who decided to bid farewell to Greece's political and economic turmoil and?arrived in the quaint southern German city of Boeblingen nine months ago. She didn't speak a word of German.

"The most difficult thing was learning German, it was terrifying at the beginning,"?Paschali told NBC News.?"Life is so quiet and structured here in Boeblingen, which is quite a contrast to the hectic routine I experienced in Athens."

She responded to a job offer from German engineering development supplier Ruecker, a company which mainly services the automobile and aviation sectors.

Europe told to prep for Greek exit scenario

Wiesbaden-based?Ruecker is?actively recruiting technical engineers?from Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy, offering them a two-month paid language course followed by an open-ended contract with a guaranteed base salary of about $4,500 per month.

"There are simply not enough qualified applicants on the German market," says Thomas Aukamm, who works for Ruecker's marketing and recruiting department.?"These are investments that we need to make in order to secure the workforce that we work with in the future."

The company has received about 3,500 applications, mainly from southern European countries, and is presently evaluating about 500 of them.

"Even if we could only fill 10 percent of the open positions, we would be very happy," Aukamm added.

Many residents fear that a slow economy is cutting into the number of foreign visitors. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

'Leaving everything behind'
For Paschali, whose parents, 28-year-old brother and other close family members remain in Greece, the move to Germany was not an easy choice.

Paschali already had a job at a local company in Athens, but she was forced to accept a 20 percent pay cut due to the financial crisis.

"Leaving everything behind with an uncertain future was difficult, of course, but I was seeking stability and believe that I can find it here in Germany," says Paschali, who is originally from the rural town of Trikala.

Greeks withdraw $894 million in one day

Greece's national unemployment rate presently stands at nearly 22 percent overall ??German tabloid BILD has depicted Greeks as "lazy" ??and widespread protests against the government's austerity measures continue. However, an estimated 70,000 engineering positions remain unfilled at the moment in Germany.

University graduate Anna Sioki moved to Germany from Greece two years ago. "I was one of the lucky ones because I left at the beginning of the crisis," she says.

"Germany's skilled labor shortage could have severe economic consequences," said Dr. Ina Kayser of the?the German Association of Engineers (VDI). "We estimate that the labor market could face economic losses of up to 7 billion euros, or nearly $10 billion, as a result of, for example, production delays or necessary relocation of production abroad."

Other German business sectors are also starting to look abroad.

'Vicious circle': Europe crisis threatens world economy, OECD says

Hospitals and private medical practices are also in need of highly trained personnel, especially in Germany's rural areas, where many workers have migrated to cities.

Karl Horn, staff manager at the Rheinhessen Clinic in Alzey, says that health care executives are increasingly looking at the southern European labor market.

"We've already sent out tweets in Spanish to advertise openings at our clinic," Horn said.?

Why so glum? Germans struggle to find joy, poll suggests

Despite a degree in applied foreign languages,?Anna Sioki was only able to find work at a book store in Thessaloniki after finishing her studies in 2009. She decided to come to Germany two years ago.

A new election is scheduled for June 17, as debate continues over the country's place in the euro zone. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

"I was one of the lucky ones because I left at the beginning of the crisis," the 27-year-old told NBC News.

Her parents were not as fortunate. Sioki's father, an electrician, had to close his shop due to a lack of business and has been unemployed for nearly two years. Her parents now live on a small pension that her mother receives.

"It is pretty bad that all the specialists are going abroad," Sioki self-critically remarked.?"How is Greece supposed to make progress that way? But, I see no other solution for myself and the other young Greeks."

The inconvenient truth about Retina iPad gaming

Back in March, I analyzed whether the new iPad has enough oomph to drive graphics-intensive games natively at the new iPad?s 2,048-by-1,536 pixel resolution. The crux of the article: framer rates in Retina-optimized games can drop to well below what the iPad 2 delivers.

With no change on the CPU side and only 2x speed gain on the GPU side, the new iPad clearly has issues offseting the Retina display?s 4x pixel count increase.

Today, The Verge sheds more light on the matter by putting the device through its paces in real-world tests based on a handful of latest triple-A games. The findings may surprise even the most hard-core gamers among you?

Sam Byford, writing for The Verge, investigated how the A5X chip handles the demands of Retina-level resolution. He concluding that the Retina display is holding back iPad graphics in 3D-intensive titles.

Having played nearly all games Byford referred to in his article, I?m with him on every point.. As it turns out, the new iPad does exhibit worrying performance issues when graphics-intensive games render at its 2,048-by-1,5336 pixel resolution.

A good example is N.O.V.A. 3, Gameloft?s sci-fi shooter with console-quality graphics. Unfortunately, sacrifices had to be made on the new iPad.

The game is indeed much more effects-laden on the older tablet, with depth-of-field blurring and some particle effects such as burning buildings in the background completely removed on the new iPad. The iPad 2 also tends to handle the game at a steadier framerate.

That?s why not many titles support Retina iPad gaming natively. What most games do instead is they rendered in 1,024-by-768 with full detail and anti-aliasing to reduce jaggines then upscale individual frames to 2,048-by-1,536.

Though the results usually look pretty good, nothing really beats the crispness and sharpness of native Retina iPad gaming. By the way, 1080p games on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 often employ the same upscaling trick.

Of course, we?re talking about the cream of the crop here, meaning the very best 3D games that really push the envelope in the graphics department.

2D games and those that don?t push 3D graphics to the extreme don?t require as much grunt and look just fine at native Retina resolution. Typical examples would be games such as Cut the Rope HD or Angry Birds Space.

Here are some interesting takeaways:

?? ?there?s no question? that Modern Combat 3 runs better on the iPad 2: according to Byford,??the framerate is a lot less stable, and there are missing effects such as motion blur when you move your camera and a shallow depth of field when looking through your rifle?s iron sights?
? surprise, surprise ? Infinity Blade 2 uses resolution upscaling on iPad 3 and ?the slightly haphazard up-conversion draws attention? to the device?s limitations
? In Riptide GP, Tegra-3 specific effects seen on the Asus Transformer Prime tablet ?remain absent? on the iPad 3, an indication that Nvidia?s chip boasts juicer graphics hardware

Two notable exceptions here:?Real Racing 2 HD and Shadowgun.

The former ?runs at full resolution and full speed with anti-aliasing and some extra detail on the car models? and the latter doesn?t make any sacrifices to run on the Retina display, but it lacks the extra effects and physics modeling present in the Tegra 3 version on the Prime tablet.

As such, both games serve as a powerful demonstration of the new iPad?s capability.

Summing up, the author concludes that ?it?s rare to see a demanding game run at Retina resolution without compromise?, which is consistent with my own observations.

The finding could surprise avid gamers. After all, Apple says its A5X chip is better than Nvidia?s Tegra 3 silicon found inside high-end Android phones and tablets.

While a?non-scientific benchmark?suggested?Apple might have an edge over Nvidia, it?s nothing like?the 4x performance increase the company bragged about during March?s iPad 3 unveiling.

If you know a thing or two about the graphics industry, you?ll be hardly surprised.

The A5X chip sports the same dual-core Cortex-A9 MPCore CPU with NEON SIMD accelerator from ARM Holdings like its predecessor.

The only differentiator is the improved graphics engine with four cores (two on the iPad 2). Compare this to Nvidia?s chip which boasts a four-core CPU and a whopping twelve graphics cores.

Let?s also not forget that graphics is Nvidia?s expertise.

As for me, I?ll believe Apple?s claims when I see some spectacular-looking games running smooth as butter on my new iPad, without laginess and jerkiness I often see in today?s triple-As.

Tuna record Fukushima pollution

Pacific Bluefin tuna caught off the coast of California have been found to have radioactive contamination from last year's Fukushima nuclear accident.

The fish would have picked up the pollution while swimming in Japanese waters, before then moving to the far side of the ocean.

Scientists stress that the fish are still perfectly safe to eat.

However, the case does illustrate how migratory species can carry pollution over vast distances, they say.

"It's a lesson to us in how interconnected eco-regions can be, even when they may be separated by thousands of miles," Nicholas Fisher, a professor of marine sciences at Stony Brook University, New York, told BBC News.

Fisher and colleagues report their study in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

They examined the muscle tissues of 15 Bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) taken from waters off San Diego in August 2011, just a few months after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

These were animals whose parents would have spawned in Japanese waters and spent one to years locally before heading to feeding grounds in the eastern Pacific.

All the fish examined in the study showed elevated levels of radioactive caesium - the isotopes 134 and 137.

Caesium-137 is present in seawater anyway as a result of the fallout from atomic weapons testing, but the short, two-year half-life of caesium-134 means the contamination can be tied directly to Fukushima. There is no other explanation for the isotope's presence.

The measured concentrations were about 10 times the total caesium radioactivity seen in tuna specimens taken from before the accident.

As a control, the team also examined Yellowfin tuna, which are largely residential in the eastern Pacific.

Professor Nicholas Fisher was 'stunned' to find the radioactive signal in bluefin tuna.

These animals showed no difference in their pre- or post-Fukushima concentrations.

The research is likely to get attention because Bluefin tuna is an iconic species and a highly valuable fishery - thousands of tonnes are landed annually.

But consumers should have no health concerns about eating California-caught tuna from last year, the team says.

The levels of radioactivity are well within permitted limits, and below those from other radioisotopes that occur naturally in the environment, such as potassium-40.

"The potassium was about 30 times higher than the combined radio-caesium levels. If you calculate how much additional radioactivity there is in the Pacific Bluefin tuna caught in California relative the natural background - it's about 3%," said Prof Fisher.

The scientists even calculated how much radioactivity might have been present in the fish before they swam across the Pacific (it would have fallen over time) and figured it could have been 50% above background levels; but, again, this would still have met the legal requirements for safe consumption.

Tuna caught in the coming months will be subjected to new tests. These animals would have spent much longer in Japanese waters and so conceivably could have a very different pollution load.

The team also believes the investigation should be extended to other migratory species that frequent Japanese waters.

Fukushima pollution is potentially a very useful tool to trace the origin and timing of animal movements. The ratio of caesium 134 to 137 could be used like a clock to work out when and how long a particular migration took.

"This information might be useful in conservation efforts or in managing fisheries," said Prof Fisher.

Cowgirl tennis qualifies for NCAA tournament

A small room erupted in celebration in Gallagher-Iba on Tuesday evening, for the OSU women?s tennis team received the news that its season would continue.

Coach Chris Young and his team huddled around a large screen TV to hear their name announced as one of the 64 teams that will compete in the NCAA Women?s Tennis Team Tournament.

?I?m really excited for the girls,? Young said. ?When I came here three years ago, I knew the challenges that were ahead of us. Today is the culmination of three years of hard work and determination, and it?s great for the girls.?

The Cowgirls will face Georgia Tech in the first round, a welcomed opponent.

?I knew that we would be right there playing a team that is pretty even with us,? Young said. ?We have seen them quite a bit. When you have some familiarity for an opponent, it helps us prepare for the moment.?

The Cowgirls? first match in the single-elimination tournament will be May 11, and Young said his team would be well prepared.

?I have experience in this, understanding how the schedule works out this first week will be tricky with finals, but after this week my experience will help them make the transition to post season,? Young said.

Junior C. C. Sardinha anticipated the reward of a postseason, and her hopes built up going into the selection show.

?We are pumped,? Sardinha said. ?There were hints that we would get in. It was just nice to finally hear it.?

Sardinha echoed the confidence that the Cowgirls are taking into the postseason and gave a glimpse of what has been behind the team?s success this season.

?We will play Stanford, UCLA, anyone; bring it on,? she said.

If the Cowgirls knock down their first three opponents, they could face UCLA in the quarterfinals, but that is a long way off.

Malika Rose, a junior for the Cowgirls, said the team is focused on the task at hand.

?We had this goal at the beginning of the year, but we didn?t think it was that close,? Rose said. ?We just want to take it one match at a time and focus on our advantage in the doubles matchups.?
