90% Bernie

Richard Linklater's "Bernie" is very enjoyable, and it's funny in a dark, unique way. Jack Black gives a wonderful performance as the title character, a mortician and funeral director who appears to have no gender and no sexuality. But ultimately the film doesn't have much to say. It's a good time, and it's worth seeing. But don't expect too much. The film is set in east Texas and is based on actual events. A very unique funeral director becomes the most beloved person in his town, surprisingly enough. When he commits a shocking murder, the town rallies around him, calling to mind "Dog Day Afternoon." The best thing by far, however, are the interviews with actual east Texans who knew the real Bernie. Somehow Linklater is able to get these people to express themselves on camera, using their wildly colorful local slang, and I howled out loud many times. But it's not a very strong statement about the film that the interviews are the best part.

Don't dismiss the Nexus Q just yet ? it has potential

18 hrs.

When Google announced the Nexus Q, an Android-powered "social streaming device," most people scoffed. It has a silly label ??what is social streaming anyway? ??and a startling $299 price tag. But don't write the ball-shaped?gadget off just yet,?because it has the guts and soul to roll its way into your home.

During the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, I?spent a lot of time chatting with folks about the Nexus Q. It's been referred to as everything from a "ball of awesomeness" ??by a Google employee's son?? to a "polished turd."

The price tag's what riled people up most, of course. Why spend $300 on the Nexus Q when you can buy an Apple TV for $99?

"Because it's got all the potential in the world," I theorized, while discussing the device with a former Apple developer. Don't get me wrong, I learned long ago that the true?potential of anything is rarely ever met, but Google's nudging the Nexus Q along in the right ways.

Right now you can only access media through Google Play (formerly the?Android Market) and YouTube on the Nexus Q, but that'll easily change in the future. Google's made sure that the Nexus Q is as?open as possible to developers (and even plans on setting up forums to encourage them). There could soon be all sorts of apps, hacks and tricks for the Android-powered device.

If software enhancements aren't sufficient, then you should keep in mind that the Nexus Q has a micro USB port which could be used for third-party accessories.

You see where I'm going with this? The Nexus Q offers 16GB of on-board storage, NFC support, can be expanded using the micro USB slot, is as open as the 24-hour diner down the street, and can double as a weapon. (This thing's surprisingly heavy.)

It might take a generation or two for the surface of the Nexus Q's potential to be truly scratched, but once it is, Apple TV and other similar devices are in trouble.

The Nexus Q can be pre-ordered now. It will start shipping in mid-July.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Congress passes student loans, highway jobs, flood insurance package; sends measure to Obama

Finding rare political accommodation on the cusp of a holiday recess, Congress passed legislation Friday designed to salvage 2.8 million jobs and shield students from a sharp increase in loan interest rates.

The legislation, which also revamps highway and transit programs and shores up the federal flood insurance program, now goes to the White House for President Barack Obama's signatures.

Lawmakers trying to leave town for a weeklong Fourth of July recess had been facing twin deadlines: Federal highway and transit aid programs and the government's authority to levy federal fuel taxes were expiring Saturday. And interest rates on new student loans were set to double on Sunday.

The burst of legislating came just four months before the November elections, giving lawmakers achievements to show off to voters who have increasingly held Congress in low esteem while the economy continues to flounder.

"We have a bill that will boost this economy. We have a bill that is supported by conservatives and liberals, progressives and moderates. I think it's a great day," said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., who led Senate negotiations on the transportation portion of the package.

Boxer estimated the bill would save about 1.8 million jobs by keeping aid for highway and transit construction flowing to states and create another 1 million jobs by using federal loan guarantees to leverage private sector investment in infrastructure projects.

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said: "Probably millions would have been put out of work if we hadn't acted."

Not all lawmakers were happy.

"At least it's not as bad as our Republican colleagues wanted," complained Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., who has championed bike and pedestrian programs that the measure would squeeze. "But make no mistake, it is not a bill to be proud of."

In the bargaining that led up to an agreement on the package earlier this week, House Republicans gave up their demands that the bill require approval of the contentious Keystone XL oil pipeline and block federal regulation of toxic waste generated by coal-fired power plants. Democrats gave ground on environmental protections and biking, pedestrian and safety programs.

The bill consolidates various transportation programs and reduces the number of programs by two-thirds. States would have more flexibility on how they spend transportation aid. It also revamps rules on environmental studies of the potential impact of highway projects, with an aim toward cutting in half the time it takes to complete construction projects. And the measure contains an array of safety initiatives, including requirements that would make it more likely passengers would survive a tour bus crash.

"It doesn't have everything," Mica said. But "we were able to do more with less and move transportation for the nation forward."

The bill would spend about $100 billion on federal highway programs over two years, but puts off the politically tricky decision on how to pay for them after that.

The federal 18.4 cent-a-gallon gasoline tax and 24.4 cent-a-gallon diesel tax are no longer enough to pay for current spending on highway and transit programs. And two commissions and an array of private sector experts have said the U.S. should be spending about twice as much or more on its transportation infrastructure as it does now.

But Congress and the White House have refused to discuss raising fuel taxes or an alternative long-term source of money. The federal trust funds that pay for highway and transit programs are forecast to be nearly broke by the time the bill expires.

"When the bill expires we face a high cliff from which the program could fall," said Erich Zimmerman, a policy analyst with Taxpayers for Common Sense.

The fuel taxes are not indexed for inflation and haven't been increased since 1993, so their buying power has steadily eroded. Also, cars and trucks today are more fuel-efficient and the number of miles driven has flattened, resulting in less gas tax revenue. Since 2008, Congress has three times dipped into the national general treasury to borrow a total of $34.5 billion to keep transportation programs going.

Congressional bargainers reached an agreement earlier this week on the $6 billion college loan portion of the bill that would avert a doubling of interest rates beginning Sunday on federal loans to 7.4 million students. The current 3.4 percent interest rate on subsidized Stafford loans would balloon back to 6.8 percent on Sunday under a cost-saving maneuver contained in a 2007 law.

About $20 billion of the measure's cost is paid for by making changes in companies' pension calculations that will reduce their tax deductions, and increasing the payments businesses must make to insure their pension programs.

The bill also extends the federal flood insurance program to protect 5.6 million households and businesses. It addresses a shortfall arising from claims after 2005's Hurricane Katrina by reducing insurance subsidies for vacation homes and allowing for increases in premiums.

The measure also requires that 80 percent of fines for violations of the Clean Water Act as a result of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will go to a trust fund for Gulf Coast states damaged by the spill.

Stocks drop after healthcare ruling

? Brendan Mcdermid / Reuters / REUTERS

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 1 p.m. ET: Stocks were down sharply Thursday as investors were skeptical that the latest European Union summit would agree on concrete measures to tackle the region's debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrial average was lately down over 150 points.

Health-related shares were in focus after news that the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of President Obama?s health care law.

Related: Hospital shares rise on health ruling, insurers fall

Financial shares were in also focus, with JPMorgan losing ground on a report that recent trading losses could reach $9 billion and Barclays stock down sharply in the aftermath of a probe into the manipulation of interbank lending rates.

EU leaders meet Thursday more openly divided than at any time since the euro crisis began, with Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel showing no sign of relenting in her refusal to back other countries' debts.

A spokesman for German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said that a report that Germany could be willing to move sooner than expected to accept shared liability of euro zone debt was not true.

Spanish benchmark 10-year yields hovered near the 7 percent level that recently forced other highly indebted countries to seek bailouts. Markets have been worrying that Spain, the euro zone's fourth-largest economy, will have to ask for financial help in excess of the 100 billion euros already approved for Madrid to bail out its banks.

Data showed the number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, but remained too high to signal any major improvement in the labor market.

"There are no surprises here. Claims are pretty much around where they were last week. This is a lackluster economy and I'm worried about what the June payroll will look like, but people are right now focused on health care and Europe," said Wayne Kaufman, chief market analyst at John Thomas Financial in New York.

Shares of JPMorgan Chase & Co dropped in the wake of a New York Times report projecting that losses from a recent botched trade could reach $9 billion in a worst-case scenario, more than four times the original estimate.

U.S.-traded shares of British bank Barclays tumbled a day after an investigation found it had manipulated interbank lending rates over several years, in a probe that could cost the financial industry billions of dollars.

Adding to the gloom in finance, Citi Investment Research posted a bearish note on several U.S. banks including Bank of America Corp and Goldman Sachs as the slow economic recovery hurts trading.

The board of News Corp approved in principle splitting the $60 billion media conglomerate into separate publishing and entertainment businesses, a person familiar with the situation said.

Commodity prices fell as the U.S. dollar strengthened against the euro, possibly hurting prices of stocks in the materials and energy sectors.

Reuters contributed to this report.

"I think it's a pretty clear negative catalyst for the next month or two," says Barry Knapp, Barclays, discusses the impact of the high court's health care ruling on the markets and U.S. economy.

Earth's oldest known impact crater found in Greenland

Earth's oldest known impact crater found in Greenland [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 28-Jun-2012

A 100 kilometre-wide crater has been found in Greenland, the result of a massive asteroid or comet impact a billion years before any other known collision on Earth.

The spectacular craters on the Moon formed from impacts with asteroids and comets between 3 and 4 billion years ago. The early Earth, with its far greater gravitational mass, must have experienced even more collisions at this time but the evidence has been eroded away or covered by younger rocks. The previously oldest known crater on Earth formed 2 billion years ago and the chances of finding an even older impact were thought to be, literally, astronomically low.

Now, a team of scientists from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) in Copenhagen, Cardiff University in Wales, Lund University in Sweden and the Institute of Planetary Science in Moscow has upset these odds. Following a detailed programme of fieldwork, funded by GEUS and the Danish 'Carlsbergfondet' (Carlsberg Foundation), the team have discovered the remains of a giant 3 billion year old impact near the Maniitsoq region of West Greenland.

"This single discovery means that we can study the effects of cratering on the Earth nearly a billion years further back in time than was possible before," according to Dr Iain McDonald of Cardiff University's School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, who was part of the team.

Finding the evidence was made all the harder because there is no obvious bowl-shaped crater left to find. Over the 3 billion years since the impact, the land has been eroded down to expose deeper crust 25 km below the original surface. All external parts of the impact structure have been removed, but the effects of the intense impact shock wave penetrated deep into the crust - far deeper than at any other known crater - and these remain visible.

However, because the effects of impact at these depths have never been observed before it has taken nearly three years of painstaking work to assemble all the key evidence. "The process was rather like a Sherlock Holmes story," said Dr McDonald. "We eliminated the impossible in terms of any conventional terrestrial processes, and were left with a giant impact as the only explanation for all of the facts."

Only around 180 impact craters have ever been discovered on Earth and around 30% of them contain important natural resources of minerals or oil and gas. The largest and oldest known crater prior to this study, the 300 kilometre wide Vredefort crater in South Africa, is 2 billion years in age and heavily eroded.

Dr McDonald added that "It has taken us nearly three years to convince our peers in the scientific community of this but the mining industry was far more receptive. A Canadian exploration company has been using the impact model to explore for deposits of nickel and platinum metals at Maniitsoq since the autumn of 2011."

The international team was led by Adam A. Garde, senior research scientist at GEUS. The first scientific paper documenting the discovery has just been published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters.

Sony Xperia Neo L peels back the covers for FCC

Sony Xperia Neo L peels back the covers for FCC

Remember that low-end Xperia handset that surfaced earlier this month with a one-way ticket to China? Well that 4-inch ICS device, the Neo L, has just made its many assets known for the folks at the FCC, stripping down to its internal skivvies and leaving nothing to the (lawyer's) imagination. There aren't any surprises here -- no LTE or AWS support, but it does sport radios for EDGE / GPRS (850MHz, 1900MHz), GSM (850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, 1900MHz) and WCDMA (900MHz, 2100MHz). So, the good news is that if you have your eye on this Sony-made Android lightweight, then it should play nice with AT&T and T-Mobile. Whether it'll ever officially joins those carriers lineups remains to be seen, but don't let a little thing like that stop you from importing away. Hit up the source to trawl the mobile dissection at your leisure.

It's not just how many calories, but what kind, study finds

A calorie is a calorie is a calorie ? or is it?

Maybe not, a small study has found. Once the pounds are shed, the proportions of carbohydrates, proteins and fats you chow down on may determine whether you keep the weight off ? or slowly but surely pack on pounds again.

In an intensive, seven-month experiment during which 21 overweight men and women had their diets strictly controlled down to each last morsel, researchers showed that a traditional low-fat diet seemed to make the metabolism more sluggish than a high-protein one during the most difficult part of weight loss: keeping fat off once it's shed.

The preliminary work, which was published Tuesday in the Journal of theAmerican Medical Assn., provides support for a growing group of scientists who argue that what people eat may be just as key as how much they eat.

In a nutshell, "from a metabolic perspective, all calories are not alike," said study senior author Dr. David Ludwig, director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Children's Hospital Boston. "The quality of the calories going in affects the quantity of the calories going out."

Maintaining weight loss is a challenge that stymies the vast majority of dieters. Only 1 in 6 overweight and obese adults say they have ever held onto a loss of 10% body weight or greater for even a year, the team noted in its report.

Scientists knew that weight loss was accompanied by a slowdown in the body's metabolism. To test whether different foods might influence that, Ludwig and his colleagues recruited overweight and obese adults ages 18 to 40. From 2006 to 2010, they marched the volunteers through several controlled feeding studies.

The 13 men and eight women followed a 12-week weight-loss regimen that helped them shed 10% to 15% of their body weight followed by a four-week weight-stabilization phase.

After that, each subject was fed three different diets for four weeks at a time: a traditional low-fat diet (60% carbohydrates, 20% fat and 20% protein), a low glycemic index diet (with 40% carbs, 40% fat and 20% protein) and a very low-carbohydrate diet a la Atkins (with 10% carbohydrates, 60% fat and 30% protein).

At the beginning of the study and at the end of each four-week stint, the subjects were hospitalized for three days to undergo a battery of tests. Scientists measured their resting energy expenditure using indirect calorimetry, which assesses gases in the breath to calculate calories burned.

They also looked at all the energy burned by the subject in a day using stable isotope analysis, which examines how rapidly isotopes leave the body over days and weeks.

The researchers also screened participants' blood and urine to record insulin sensitivity and levels of cholesterol, key hormones and other substances that are linked to a risk for heart disease or metabolic problems.

For all three diets, the rate of calories burned at rest was lower than before weight loss. But over the course of a day, the subjects burned more than 300 additional calories on average when on the verylow-carbohydrate dietcompared with the low-fat diet.

"That's roughly equal to an hour of moderate physical activity ? without lifting a finger," Ludwig said.

Subjects burned 200 additional calories on the low glycemic index diet than on the low-fat diet. A low glycemic index diet is rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables and is designed to prevent sharp spikes in blood sugar.

Weight-loss experts not involved in the research praised it, while acknowledging its limitations.

"It's a small study, so I'd want to see it repeated. But I have no reason to doubt the result," said Susan Roberts, a professor of nutrition and psychiatry at Tufts University in Boston.

However, University of Minnesota nutrition professor Joanne Slavin said that though the calorie-burning differences could work to people's advantage, she worried that dieters would flock to low-carb diets that might be unhealthful.

"The Atkins-type diet [in this study] only had 11 grams of fiber in it," she noted. The recommended daily allowance for fiber in adults is at least twice that.

Ludwig also didn't recommend a very low-carb diet even though it offered the best metabolic edge. Some measurements suggested it could be risky for the heart, he said.

Blood samples drawn from participants in the low-carb diet phase contained elevated levels of the stress hormone cortisol as well as C-reactive protein, which signals chronic inflammation in the body and has been linked to cardiovascular disease.

The low-glycemic diet ? which he has recommended for a long time ? did not seem to have these problems, he said, making it the best bet.

But Roberts discounted the significance of the blood tests.

"I don't make anything huge of it," she said. "You need many more subjects to make that significant."

Rewriting quantum chips with a beam of light: Laser technique brings ultrafast computing closer to reality

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? The promise of ultrafast quantum computing has moved a step closer to reality with a technique to create rewritable computer chips using a beam of light. Researchers from The City College of New York (CCNY) and the University of California Berkeley (UCB) used light to control the spin of an atom's nucleus in order to encode information.

The technique could pave the way for quantum computing, a long-sought leap forward toward computers with processing speeds many times faster than today's. The group will publish their results on June 26 in Nature Communications.

Current electronic devices are approaching the upper limits in processing speed, and they rely on etching a pattern into a semiconductor to create a chip or integrated circuit. These patterns of interconnections serve as highways to shuttle information around the circuit, but there is a drawback.

"Once the chip is printed, it can only be used one way," explained Dr. Jeffrey Reimer, UCB professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and the study co-author.

The team -- including CCNY Professor of Physics Carlos Meriles and PhD graduate students Jonathan King of UCB and Yunpu Li of CCNY- saw a remedy for these problems in the emerging sciences of spintronics and quantum computing.

They have developed a technique to use laser light to pattern the alignment of "spin" within atoms so that the pattern can be rewritten on the fly. Such a technique may one day lead to rewritable spintronic circuits.

Digital electronics and conventional computing rely on translating electrical charges into the zeros and ones of binary code. A "spintronics" computer, on the other hand, would use the quantum property of electron spin, which enables the electron to store any number between zero and one.

Imagine this as if the electron were a "yin-yang" symbol in which the proportions of the dark and light areas -- representing values from zero to one -- could vary at will. This would mean that multiple computations could be done simultaneously, which would amp up processing power.

Attempts at using electrons for quantum computing have been plagued, however, by the fact that electron spins switch back and forth rapidly. Thus, they make very unstable vehicles to hold information. To suppress the random switching back and forth of electrons, the UCB and CCNY researchers used laser light to produce long-lasting nuclear spin "magnets" that can pull, push, or stabilize the spins of the electrons.

They did this by illuminating a sample of gallium arsenide -- the same semiconductor used in cell phone chips -- with a pattern of light, much as lithography etches a physical pattern onto a traditional integrated circuit. The illuminated pattern aligned the spins of all the atomic nuclei, and, thus, their electrons, at once, creating a spintronic circuit.

"What you could have is a chip you can erase and rewrite on the fly with just the use of a light beam," said Professor Meriles. Changing the pattern of light altered the layout of the circuit instantly.

"If you can actually rewrite with a beam of light and alter this pattern, you can make the circuit morph to adapt to different requirements," he added. "Imagine what you can make a system like that do for you!"

National Research Council presents long-term priorities for U.S. nuclear physics program

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Nuclear physics is a discovery-driven enterprise aimed at understanding the fundamental nature of visible matter in the universe. For the past hundred years, new knowledge of the nuclear world has also directly benefited society through many innovative applications. In its fourth decadal survey of nuclear physics, the National Research Council outlines the impressive accomplishments of the field in the last decade and recommends a long-term strategy for the future.

The report builds on the Nuclear Science Advisory Committee's 2007 five-year plan and commends the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation for effective management of the U.S. nuclear physics program. Recommended priorities for the future include exploiting recent upgrades of nuclear physics facilities, the timely completion of the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, the development and implementation of a targeted program of underground science, and the creation of two national competitions for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

"The recommendations in this report will help ensure a thriving and healthy field that continues to benefit society from new applications at an accelerating pace," said Stuart Freedman, professor of physics at the University of California at Berkeley, and chair of the committee that wrote the report. "The impact of nuclear physics extends well beyond furthering our scientific knowledge of the nucleus and the nature and origin of visible matter. Nuclear physics is relevant to the most important of today's problems in energy, health, and the environment."

Sophisticated new tools and protocols have been developed for successful management of the largest projects in nuclear physics, the report says. But to keep the U.S. program nimble and competitive, the committee recommends that federal agencies develop streamlined and flexible procedures tailored for initiating and managing smaller-scale nuclear science projects.

The report also advises the theoretical nuclear science community to develop a plan for exploiting the rapidly increasing power of modern computing, and to establish the infrastructure and collaborations now in order to take advantage of these capabilities as they become available.Additional priorities for the field should include continued investment in accelerator and detector research and the possible development of an electron-ion collider.

Two videos have been prepared in conjunction with the report to illustrate several of its main ideas. The videos are suitable for classroom use and clearly articulate the scientific rationale and objectives for nuclear physics, placing near-term goals in a broader international context. The videos are available here: http://sites.nationalacademies.org/BPA/BPA_069589.

The study was sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council make up the National Academies. They are private, nonprofit institutions that provide science, technology, and health policy advice under a congressional charter. Michael Jackson Still The King Of Pop Three Years After Death

MJ's continued influence on pop culture has proved that the King of Pop will forever remain in the hearts of music fans.
By Nadeska Alexis

Music fans the world over can mark June 25, 2009 as one of those eerie days that force them to recall exactly what they were doing in the moments before they heard tragic news. Michael Jackson died that day, at the age of 50, and the world was not ready to see him go.

No entertainer could ever fill the void that MJ left behind, but his memory has not faded in the three years that he's been gone. In the past 12 months alone, we've seen Jackson-inspired productions, heard narratives from celebrities who continually cite him as a key influence, and this summer his face will be plastered on Pepsi cans to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his classic album Bad. Keep reading to see a few examples from the past year that prove that Jackson has remained forever in the heart of pop culture.

Conrad Murray manslaughter trial

The public and very messy manslaughter trial for Jackson's doctor Conrad Murray began in late September, and it was an excruciating and drawn-out ordeal for fans who were hoping to find closure after the star's death. After a painstaking six-week trial, which included testimony from 49 witnesses, a jury delivered a guilty verdict on involuntary manslaughter charges for Murray on November 7, and the world let out a collective sigh of relief.

Watch the Throne shout-out

The guilty verdict in Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial was handed down just hours before Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch the Throne tour hit Madison Square Garden in New York, and it was clear that the hip-hop Titans were paying attention, just like everyone else. While spitting his lines on the WTT's "Welcome to the Jungle," Jay threw extra emphasis on the line, "Rest in peace to the leader of the Jackson 5," which drew applause from the crowd.

Cirque Du Soleil launches Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour

After a few preliminary shows in Canada, in October Cirque Du Soleil launched Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour in the U.S., dedicating a two-hour production entirely to the fallen legend. The mind-blowing mashup of dance and acrobatics, set to MJ's music, was an immediate hit, and the 65 artists who trained intensely for their performances did not take their responsibilities lightly. When MTV News caught up with one of the dancers backstage, following a performance set to "Danger," he admitted that the entire production was deeply emotional, and that if MJ could see the show, "he would feel such a sense of pride of what he has given us to work with."

Jackson tops fans' hologram wish list

Tupac's hologram appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April set off a firestorm of speculation about which deceased entertainer we could expect to see onstage next. Not surprisingly, MJ was on the tip of many a fan's tongue. LMFAO's Redfoo put MJ's name at the top of his hologram wish list, while a quick poll of fans in the Times Square area found that the masses wholeheartedly agreed."It's a really cliché answer, but in my time I've never seen [Michael Jackson] and it would just be something awesome to watch," one fan told MTV News.

Justin Bieber's "Die in Your Arms" single inspired by MJ

Justin Bieber stopped by MTV's Times Square studio on June 19 for his "Bieber Live" special, during which the 18-year-old superstar performed one of his new singles "Die in Your Arms," and explained that the track was inspired by old MJ footage he viewed during a session with producer Rodney Jerkins. "Before I got in the booth, [Rodney Jerkins] showed me this hour-long video of Michael [Jackson] footage, never been seen before. It's Michael's personality, him in the booth dancing. It's some really special stuff," Bieber recalled. "So me seeing that, going in there and being inspired and working with Rodney, who worked with Michael — it was incredible."

Pepsi 'Live For Now' Campaign

In 1984 Michael Jackson first linked up with Pepsi for a $5 million marketing campaign, and 28 years later the soda giant is teaming up with the Jackson estate to commemorate the 25th anniversary edition of his classic album Bad. The "Live for Now" campaign will find the icon's face plastered on special, limited-edition Pepsi cans this summer. The cans will include special download codes treating fans to Bad remixes.

Rick Ross shouts out MJ on Self Made Vol. 2

From Bieber to Rick Ross, no artist has escaped the influence of Michael Jackson. The Maybach Music Group CEO is unveiling his latest compilation album Self Made Vol. 2 on Tuesday, just one day after the anniversary of Jackson's death, and that fact didn't escape him. Ross begins the LP's intro by telling fans, "If Michael Jackson came alive right now, he'd ask you to smoke one for him. So in his honor [lights up]."

Jackson Brothers launch Unity Tour

Five days before the June 25 anniversary of MJ's death, his four brothers — Jermaine, Jackie, Tito and Marlon — launched their Unity Tour. The Jackson brothers revealed that a joint tour has been in the making for years, but admitted that they needed time to heal after losing the most famous member of the Jackson 5. Following Michael's death, all four brothers were featured on the A&E reality series "The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty," which found them coping with their loss. In April it was rumored that an MJ hologram would make an appearance on the jaunt, but there's been no confirmation that the early reports were true.

(AP) ? It's Spain versus France for a place in the European Championship semifinals on Saturday ? the most anticipated match of the tournament so far. Here you'll find the best of Saturday's action and pre-match buildup. All times are Polish.

___

2119: That's 30 minutes gone and it's 1-0 to Spain. Sergio Ramos is shown a yellow card for blocking off Benzema and Cabaye takes the free kick, which is aiming for the top corner until Casillas tips the ball over the bar.

___

2112: The question is, what was Alonso doing up there? He normally stations himself in front of the back four, distributing the ball.

Xavi tries his luck with a shot on the bounce from outside the penalty area, but he gets underneath the ball and it sails over the bar. France has hardly had the ball in the last 10 minutes and it's looking ominous already.

___

2107: What a header that is from Alonso ? and what a way to celebrate making your 100th cap! Iniesta pokes the ball behind Reveillere and into the path of Alba, who is racing forward from left back. Alba delivers a perfect cross to the back post for the unmarked Alonso, who plants a header into the ground and past Lloris.

___

2103: GOAL! Spain 1, France 0 (Xabi Alonso)

___

2057: (at)jeromepugmire: Quite a few empty seats in both Spanish and French ends. Perhaps inflated hotel prices put them off when tickets first went on sale. (via Twitter)

Xabi Alonso shoots from inside his own half and it requires Lloris to take the catch or that would have found the net. Good effort from Alonso, who has a history of scoring from inside his own half from his days at Liverpool. Quite an even start here, although Spain has had more possession. No surprise there.

___

2051: (at)PaulLogoAP: While Casillas makes his 135th appearance for Spain, (at)XabiAlonso becomes 5th Spanish player with 100 caps against France (via Twitter)

Fabregas appeals for a penalty after clashing with Clichy but the referee waves play on. Seen them given, although he went down easily there.

___

2046: France kicks off in front of many empty seats at the Donbass Arena.

___

2042: (at)jeromepugmire Zidane and Vieira's birthday today ? they both scored the last time France knocked Spain out of a tournament, in last 16 of 2006 World Cup. (via Twitter)

Teams are out and lined up for the anthems.

___

2034: Here are the lineups, with Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso set to win his 100th international cap:

Spain: Iker Casillas, Alvaro Arbeloa, Gerard Pique, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta, David Silva, Cesc Fabregas.

France: Hugo Lloris, Anthony Reveillere, Adil Rami, Laurent Koscielny, Gael Clichy, Mathieu Debuchy, Yann M'Vila, Yohan Cabaye, Florent Malouda, Franck Ribery, Karim Benzema.

___

1943: France has made four changes, hoping a defensive midfield can slow an attack led by Cesc Fabregas. France coach Laurent Blanc dropped forwards Samir Nasri and Hatem Ben Arfa, preferring to move right back Mathieu Debuchy up to partner Franck Ribery behind striker Karim Benzema. Yohan Cabaye and Florent Malouda return in midfield alongside Yann M'Vila, while Laurent Koscielny replaces the suspended Philippe Mexes at center back. Veteran back Anthony Reveillere is on the right. Spain goes with the same lineup it used in its opening 1-1 draw against Italy with Fabregas fronting the six-man midfield rather than Fernando Torres, who had started the other two group games.

___

1930: While likening himself to Peter Pan off the pitch, Italy's often volatile striker Mario Balotelli is showing surprising focus in pure football terms before Sunday's showdown with a familiar England squad. The 21-year-old forward met the media for the first time Saturday at the European Championship and revealed how much fun it's going to be facing three of his Manchester City teammates in the quarterfinals ? England goalkeeper Joe Hart, center back Joleon Lescott and midfielder James Milner. Balotelli adds, "They know me and I know them. I just hope we win. Even though they're my teammates, I hope they're going to lose." Told about a label his agent had placed on him, Balotelli accepted the comparison, saying "I am a bit of a Peter Pan, because I'm free."

___

1920: Steven Gerrard says he wants to prove the doubters wrong by leading England into the semifinals of a major tournament for the first time in 16 years. As the England captain prepares for Sunday's quarterfinal with Italy at the European Championship, Gerrard says his country's teams "haven't shown what we are capable of" in recent years. The midfielder wants to "seize the moment" and "show our doubters and our critics out there we can compete with teams at this level."

___

1830: Today, two French legends and World Cup winners are celebrating birthdays: Zinedine Zidane turns 40 and Patrick Vieira is 36. Zidane is the last Frenchman to score in a competitive match against the Spanish. Both he and Vieira scored in a 3-1 victory at the second round of the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

___

1600: Spain has never beaten France in six competitive matches, but they're confident of victory tonight. "Football offers up something nice, which is you always get a chance at revenge and tomorrow night we get that chance," says Sergio Ramos, who played in a 3-1 second-round loss to Les Bleus at the Germany World Cup. "In 2006, we didn't possess the maturity or the experience that we have now. We were in the midst of being formed into a team, with a lot of new players." Since that result, Spain has gone on to hone the quick-touch, possession-based game that led the country to Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup triumphs.

___

1530: With three goals so far and some dazzling displays, Cristiano Ronaldo is shaping up to be the player of the tournament at Euro 2012, despite a slow start. Nevertheless, for many he's still in the shadows of Argentina's Lionel Messi. Head-to-head, Messi just shades it in terms of goals. Over the last five years, in all national and international competitions, Messi has scored 247 goals in 306 matches. That's an average of 0.81 goals per match. Ronaldo can boast 237 goals in 299 matches at a slightly-lower 0.79 goals per match.

___

1500: There's a mole in the German camp! Germany coach Joachim Loew is trying to plug a leak that has allowed news of his lineup plans to be all over the country's media hours before matches at European Championship. Coach Joachim Loew says he was upset by the leaks and believes agents are passing on information to the media after being informed whether their players have been selected in the starting XI or not. "I've spoken to the players about it. It's not they who leak the lineup directly. There are other channels. We'll find out."

___

1445: The English openly admit they won't outplay some of the better teams at Euro 2012, but in terms of tenacity and never-say-die spirit, they've traditionally been up there with the best. Says defender Ashley Cole in a BBC interview: "We're like 11 bulldogs who will never give up, who will always work for each other and basically die on the pitch for each other ... So far, it seems to be working."

Grading with Voice on an iPad - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education

George Bradford

One of the frustrating things I found in teaching online last semester was the lack of direct contact with students. The class felt impersonal, despite my efforts to give it life.

I found that especially frustrating when I graded assignments. The feedback seemed cold and distant, even as I as I tried to point out strong areas of writing and multimedia projects.

I overcame this in part by using my iPad to add audio comments to grading. This was a revelation to me. Using an app called iAnnotate, I could write comments on PDFs but also add voice comments, allowing me to make grading more personal but also add details that I otherwise wouldn?t have included.

Most students liked the voice feedback. Some, unprompted, even wrote and thanked me for taking the time to speak to them with the recorded segments.

Isle of Wight Festival Gets Soaked; Africa Oy? Festival

Isle of Wight fans arriving at the grounds. Photo Credit: Isle of Wight Festival FB

The Isle of Wight Festival, one of the oldest and most popular events in the UK, is running into major challenges after a torrential downpour resulted in massive traffic jams, mud soaked campgrounds, and suspended ferry service. Fans slept in their cars while during the wait, while others have been giving up. But with a lineup that includes Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, and Tom Petty, expect festival fans to?persevere?through a soggy weekend.

What about refunds? Festival promoter John Giddings alluded to them on BBC Radio, but that rumor has been firmly?shut down?on the official Isle of Wight Facebook page:

There are lots of rumours circulating about ticket refunds and we just wanted to clarify. The situation has now been resolved and it is possible for everyone to access the site, enjoy the Festival and the music.

The strong rain also caused the cancellation of the the Africa Oy? Festival, a free festival of African Music. From the website:

We are very sad to have to announce that due to heavy rain over the last few nights causing several Health and Safety issues in the set up of the festival site as well as the potential accidents that could happen over the weekend because of the weather, Africa Oy? has been forced to cancel this weekend?s festival in Sefton Park.

About Cloud Computing Journal

Is Your Business 100% Ready for the New Era of Cloud Computing and Big Data?
The Only Enterprise IT Event in 2012 Covering the Entire Scope of both Cloud & Big Data

Come to New York and get yourself up to date with the Big Data revolution! As advanced data storage, access and analytics technologies aimed at handling high-volume and/or fast moving data all move center stage, aided by the Cloud Computing boom, Cloud Expo is the single most effective event for you to learn how to use you own enterprise data ? processed in the Cloud ? most effectively to drive value for your business.

There is little doubt that Big Data solutions will have an increasing role in the Enterprise IT mainstream over time. Get a jump on that rapidly evolving trend at Big Data Expo, which we are introducing in June at Cloud Expo New York.

Cloud Expo was announced on February 24, 2007, the day the term "cloud computing" was coined. That same year, the first Cloud Expo took place in New York City with 450 delegates. Next June, Cloud Expo is returning to New York with more than 10,000 delegates and over 600 sponsors and exhibitors.

"Cloud" has become synonymous with "computing" and "software" in two short years. Cloud Expo is the new PC Expo, Comdex, and InternetWorld of our decade. By 2012, more than 50,000 delegates per year will participate in Cloud Expo worldwide.

The cloud is certainly a compelling alternative to running all applications within a traditional corporate data center. But moving from theory into practice is where things get complicated, and this is where attending a top industry event like Cloud Expo comes in.

No one can take full advantage of cloud computing without first becoming familiar with the latest issues and trends, which is why the organizing principle of the 10th International Cloud Conference & Expo on June 11-14, 2012 - is to ensure - through an intensive four-day schedule of keynotes, general and breakout sessions, and our bustling Expo Floor - that attending delegates leave the Javits Center with abundant resources, ideas and examples they can apply immediately to leveraging the Cloud, helping them to maximize performance, minimize cost and improve the scalability of their Enterprise IT endeavors.

Delegates will leave Cloud Expo with dramatically increased understanding the entire scope of the entire cloud computing spectrum from storage to security.

Whether you're an enterprise or small to medium business, you'll soon be benefiting from the Cloud. Join your peers in New York City June 11-14, and maximize those benefits already in 2012. See you in New York City!
