The Los Angeles County Arts Commission has announced a Teacher Professional Development Grant Program made possible by gifts from The Boeing Company, W.M. Keck Founation and the Carl & Roberta Deutsch Foundation. Arts for All has received $674,200 to support customized teacher training in the arts in twelve Los Angeles County School Districts, to be announced in May 2012.

From Arts for All?s press release: Arts for All is now able to offer professional development in arts education customized to the needs of Los Angeles County school districts. The new Teacher Professional Development Grant Program is supported by a trio of gifts totaling $674,200. The Boeing Company contributed $270,000 and the W.M. Keck Foundation $250,000 to underwrite professional development in 11 school districts to be determined by competitive application. The Carl & Roberta Deutsch Foundation?s gift of $154,200 is specifically for the Rosemead School District and includes the re-establishment of the district arts coordinator position in addition to professional development.

?The new grant program will advance school district goals for teaching and learning, and build the skills, knowledge and confidence of educators who provide arts instruction,? said L.A. County Arts Commission Director of Arts Education Ayanna Hudson. ?Arts education in County schools is vital because creativity and the ability to imagine and innovate are critical skills in the 21st century workforce.?
Arts for All is reaching out to school districts in its network that have strategic plans for arts education to invite them to apply. Currently Arts for All, which seeks to restore all arts disciplines into the core curriculum for all Los Angeles County K-12 students, is working in 49 school districts reaching 560,465 students. Arts for All is partnering with the Los Angeles Basin California Arts Project to implement the grant program.

The 11 selected school districts will be announced in May 2012 and start receiving support through the program in summer 2012. The grant program is multi-year and includes individualized district support by the Los Angeles Basin California Arts Project to create professional development plans; a summer retreat for learning, networking and planning; collection and analysis of data on the current state of arts education in schools in the districts and funding to support teacher professional development.
