AMARILLO, TEXAS -- Small business is a good way to create jobs, across our nation and in our communities.

This week, representatives from the Small Business Development Center and U.S. Small Business Administration toured some successful small businesses in our area.

When I walked into the shop at Sage Oil Vac, it was easy to pick out the suits, they stuck out like a sore thumb, but that didn't take away from the attention they were giving to Chief Operations Officer Aaron Sage.

P.J. Pronger of the Small Business Development Center said, "Small businesses are critical to our economy and to the recovery from this slump that we're in, so it's very gratifying to see that something that you've worked on over the years which is providing resources to small business to help create jobs, create new businesses is coming to fruition."

Sage Oil Vac was singled out as an example of a thriving small business with a good service to offer.

It started with three people and has grown significantly.

in 2002 they moved into the enterprise network where they were the first tenants to incubate in amarillo, and also got an amarillo enterprise challenge grant of forty thousand dollars to keep growing.

"When we graduated from the enterprise network we, the AEDC helped us with a small interest rebate program to build this facility on lakeside street and that has been very beneficial to expanding into some other markets including wind power and the lube truck business," said Sage.

Tonight, there was an awards ceremony for the Panhandles top small businesses, three out of four are from Amarillo.

Calvin Davis SBA District Director, "We're here to honor those businesses saying that hey you're the best of the best, it just so happens that most of them are here in the Panhandle."

They honored the young entrepreneur of the year Dirk van Reenen, small business person of the year Karen Day, financial services champion Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, and Dwight D. Eisenhower Award for Excellence to Pantex.

Karen Day told me it's an honor to be recognized for doing what she loves every day, and she hopes that she can continue to provide services to her loyal clients
